I started this blog on Monday June 21st with hopes of making daily entries for one full year starting on July 1st. I chose that day because that’s the day I will officially be on my own. Man oh Man, so much has happened since then that I don’t know where to start. I figured I would give some direction with a prelude to the actual story.
PRELUDE
Last August(2009) I decided to pursue a once lived career in freelance hairstyling. Since 2003 I have participated on shows during fashion week in NYC, Paris and Milan. Fashion week normally falls in February and September. These are usually the busiest time for my freelancing. So it only made sense to start submitting my resumes in August. I sent my resume to all the top agencies in NYC. Days and weeks went by with no response. I became discouraged. Had they not seen my resume! It’s loaded! Anyway unlike many people in freelance I had regular clientele in the salon. So back to work as usual. September rolled around and I did about 4 or 5 runway shows. After that week it was back to work as usual. No calls no text and no emails from agencies. I put the whole freelance thing on the back burner. In November I got a call to do America’s Next Top Model. I was excited all over again, back in the bright lights. I exchanged a couple cards, got a few potential clients. After the show nothing picked up. Back to work as usual. December was slow. The next thing for me to do was to get ready for the next season of fashion week in February 2010. This time I did no resumes. I relied solely on word of mouth. February rolled around and I did 4 or 5 runway shows. Then something strange happened. I got called for a job in March for Interview Magazine. Then something else strange happened. I got called for a job in April for Marie Claire Magazine, a Lens Crafter Commercial and a photo shoot for Jones New York. Then all of a sudden it wasn’t strange anymore. I got called for a job on May 3rd for Bloomingdale’s.com and I’ve been working every week since. Not to mention one of the agencies that I sent my resume to back in August 2009 called me to update my contact info. Also in May I worked on I love You Mag, Karen Mag, Lucky Mag, Jones New York and Tresemme! So far for June I’ve done Jones New York, Juicy Couture, Syracuse Fashion Show, Italian VOGUE, American VOGUE and Indian VOGUE.
