I have a few clients with relaxed hair that are considering going “Natural”(Letting their relaxed hair grow out without retouching the new growth). They have expressed some of their fears about making the transition. You see we always hear about the peachy side of natural hair but the truth is one of the biggest misconceptions about natural hair is that it is easier or healthier for hair. Natural hair tends to be dry and thirsty and depending on the texture of the hair can be a down right struggle to manage. Of course there are products like essential oils that are a great way to quench your hairs thirst. But there are definitely Challenges in styling especially when it comes to wearing natural hair straight. Some people grow their relaxer out only to keep it pressed straight. I personally feel that if you’re going to keep your hair straight the majority of the time you might as well keep your hair relaxed. It’s a down hill battle with humidity and also worrisome protecting it against the heat damage from the flat iron or curling iron. Some people stay away from the straight look and gravitate more to textured styles like straw set, spiral set, braid and twist sets. All natural styles require preparation. First you shampoo and condition. Its best to start the detangling process while the conditioner is in with a wide tooth comb. Second after the hair is rinsed you have to add a leave in conditioner to keep the moisture and also assists with the detangling process Part the hair into four sections comb through each one and secure with a clip or loose braid. At this point you can blow dry or start wet setting the hair. Don’t get me wrong, I am not against wearing natural hair. I wanted to inform people about level of commitment that goes along with choosing that lifestyle. Styling natural hair has actually become a breeze to me. I have tons of practice with my five-year-old twin girls. I have heard stories where mothers have spent upward of two hours on one child’s hair. I will be doing a series of product review and demonstrating their effect on children with Natural hair. So please stay tuned in.
The best thing to do to figure out if Natural hair is for you is to do a personal assessment.
Ask yourself:
How much time do I have to put into my hair?
Does it suit my style?
Does it work with my career?
Which celebrity inspires my look?
Can I live without the creamy crack?!
